Hi, I’m Michael.
I’m an illustrator based in Edinburgh.
Character, emotion, performance and play are all themes that run through my practice. I like to respond to people or artefacts from history. This can include anything from silent films, medieval manuscripts or even 18th century satirical prints.
I tend to place my work in quite immediate contexts like newspapers and posters. My work is driven by an impulsive, sketchy energy, and I always strive to describe subjects with an expressive line. When drawing characters and people, I often use their expression as a starting point, and the rest of the illustration flows outwards from there. This is partly because of a background interest in theatre and animation, and I like to think of my drawings as a kind of performance taking place on the page.
